Made out of straw, the conical hat is kept on the head by a silk cloth chinstrap that keeps it from slipping off of the wearer’s head.
The conical hat is another sign of Vietnamese inventiveness and simplicity. This simple design is thought to date back about 2500 to 3000 years ago.
It is particularly suitable for farmers who have to cope with both heavy rain and fierce sunshine but other practical uses include being used as a bowl to carrying assorted vegetables, contain water, it can even be used as a makeshift fan. For the visitor, conical hats are an integral part of the Vietnamese everyday street life.
