Hua Hin is a small holiday destination compare to Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya, with its population of less than 85,000.
However, the old resort town never stops expanding and becomes more and more popular due to its unique charm and laid back atmosphere. Getting around the town of Hua Hin is quite easy as the center area is small and very concentrated.
It is possible to explore by foot. Hua Hin is very flat that bicycle is a good way to get around locally. Rentals are available, but not as prevalent as motors. Bicycles can be hired very cheaply; one shouldn’t cost any more than a 200 baht per day. Motorbikes can be rented virtually anywhere in Hua Hin for between 200-400 Baht per day depending on the size and season. Motorbike shops will likely want you to leave your passport as collateral.
This is a common practice in Thailand. There are many car hire options, including the local arms of international companies such as Budget and Avis. Prices are fairly expensive (1,500-2,000 Baht per day for a small car), but the convenience of a small air-conditioned car can be worth it.
There are many other ways to get around, Green trucks or sawngthaews (covered utilities) leave every 15 minutes or so to from Khao Takiab to the center of town and also from there out to Hua Hin airport.
The first songtaews run from around 6 am and the last ones at around 6.30 pm (sometimes up to 9 pm in the high season). It cost only 10 – 20 baht. If you want to catch a songtaew just stand on the side of the road and signal, and to exit either press a buzzer on the roof or bash on the side or roof near your destination and the driver will stop.
There are numerous motorcycle taxis, tuk-tuks (3 or 4 wheeled, open sided taxis) and car taxis. Motorcycle taxis is relatively a cheap and faster way to travel in the town especially if you are by yourself. Negotiate price beforehand, but you will not get a tuk tuk for less than B100 over any distance if you are a Western tourist.
You will also be able to find samlors (rickshaws) for a leisure ride around the town. There are quite a lot of upscale tourists in Hua Hin and prices are sometimes adjusted. Better to clarify the matter ahead of time.
