Originally, King Buddha Yod Fa Chulalok the Great had Wang Tha Phra built as the Chao Fa Palace. In the second reign, Prachao Lukyathoe Krommamuen Chetsadabodin resided in this palace by royal permission of the King. The fifth reign gave permission to Som Et Chaofa Kromphraya Naritsara Nuwattiwong to reside here until his death. In 1993, King Vajiravudh had Praneedsilpakam School founded in wang Tha Phra.

It was under the department of fine arts and offered classes in painting and sculpture to government officials and students. The school was supervised by Proffesor Silpha Bhirasri, an Italian and it enjoyed continual growth until it was elevated to university status on October 12, 1943. Silpakorn University is the first academic institution in Thailand that teaches all branches of modern arts.
