King Rama VII had the theatre built as movie and play theatre, to commemorate 150th anniversary of Bangkok in 1932, and then named it Sala Chaloem Krung. The theatre was the first of its kind in East Asia to have air-conditioning system that made it the most modern theatre at that time.
The first play was performed on July 2, 1933 and after that it had been used mainly for movie show until it was closed for total renovation in 1968. The renovated theatre is now used for live performances like Thai classical play and sometimes movie show.
