Taukkyan War Cemetery is situated 32 km north of Yangon. This is the largest of the 3 war cemeteries in Myanmar, contains the graves of 6,374 allied soldiers and memorials together with over 27,000 Commonwealth soldiers who died in Myanmar during the Second World War but have unknown grave.
Opened in 1951, the sheer mass of names gives a sense of the destructive nature of war and some sense of the destruction the war brought to Myanmar.
This beautifully landscaped ground, which well maintained by the Commonwealth Graves Commission, is a place of quiet reflection where relatives of the soldiers from all over the world come to pay homage to their loved ones.
