Ananda Temple

The Ananda Temple is one of the 11 biggest temple structures in Burma (Myanmar), located just outside of the old city wall. Built in the years of 1091-1105, The Ananda Temple is known as the ‘Westminster Abbey of Burma’.

Shaped like a perfect Greek cross, there is a clear Indian influence to the architecture.

The four large entrance arches, topped with stone flames, face each of the cardinal points.

The name of the temple comes from the Venerable Ananda, who was Buddha’s first cousin and his personal secretary. The Ananda Temple is a sanctuary where visitors are drawn by its beauty and its promise.
