Laos, Thailand’s Eastern neighbour offers a number of fulfilling travelling destinations. With a number of new bridges spanning the mighty Mekong and cheaper flights from Bangkok to the old Laos capital of Luang Prabang, a trip to Laos has never been easier.
Laos, officially known as the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), is a country in Southeast Asia. Laos traces its history to the Kingdom of Lan Xang, which existed from the 14th to the 18th century when it split into three separate kingdoms.
A mountainous and landlocked country, Laos shares borders with Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, Thailand to the west, and Myanmar (Burma) and China to the north. The key attraction of Laos is its undoubted status as the least westernised, the most relaxed and thereby the most authentic of all Indochinese nations.
Laos has a rich history stretching back 10,000 years. Luang Prabang and Wat Phu are both UNESCO World Heritage sites, with the Plain of Jars expected to join them once more work to clear UXO has been completed.
Landlocked and laid-back, it’s a unique spin on the Southeast Asia experience. Here Buddhism permeates every facet of life, change comes slowly, and cities bed down early. The Lao wilderness is drawing travellers looking for nature, adventure or both.
Kayaking, rafting, rock-climbing and biking are all available, but it’s the community-based trekking that is most popular. Laos has become popular with tourists for its relaxed style of living and for retaining elements of the “original Asia” lost elsewhere. The official tourism slogan is “Simply Beautiful”.
