Located in the middle of town that reflects to prosperity of the Sukhothai architecture within the monastery are housed Phra Rattana Chedi, the most splendid temple of the ancient city was the Wat Mahathat near the earlier Royal Palace, a wooden building of which no trace remains.
It is the largest temple with a customary main Chedi in lotus-bud shape and 8 metre high Buddha image.
The site also features figures of demons and animals with angels riding on their backs. There are around 200 chedis within the temple compound and so there’s plenty to see and wander around.
