Prasat Ta Som Temple

Prasat Ta Som

Date Built:12th Century

Prasat Ta Som

Prasat Ta Som Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the east of Nean Pean. The temple was built in the 12 century by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII to honor his father, replica to Bayon style of art.

Designed to be entered from the east, Ta Som is surrounded by a moat and enclosed by three laterite walls which are broken by two sets of gopura (entrance ways).

Although small compared to other temple complexes in the community of Angkor Thom, it has many interesting features.

Ta Som is a Buddhist temple but was once dedicated to the Hindu Trinity, Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu. The Khmer Rouge used to use this temple as a hideout for a while.

The surrounding jungle has since been cleared back a bit for tourists to visit Ta Som.
