Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue, Yangon, Myanmar

AsiaSouth East AsiaMyanmar (Burma)Yangon (Rangoon)

Moseah Yeshua Synagogue is the only Jewish synagogue in downtown Yangon. It is a colonial relic, built in 1893 in the classic Sephardic style, contains a bimah (platform holding the reading table) in the center of the main sanctuary and a women’s balcony upstairs. In The wooden ceiling features the original blue-and-white Star of David motif.

The plot of land was granted by the British Colonial Government and following Burma’s independence, an extension was granted by the Burma authorities. With the Japanese invasion during World War II, the Jews were forced to escape from Burma and settle in other countries.

Nowadays there are probably no more than 3 dozens Jews left in the Burma.
